Celebrating the Launch of "Women of the Hebrides"

Celebrating the Launch of "Women of the Hebrides"

On Thursday, 18th July, at 7 PM, Eriskay Hall came alive with the spirit of community and celebration as Comann Eachdraidh Eirisgeidh proudly hosted the launch of Joni Buchanan's compelling new book, "Women of the Hebrides."

This insightful work delves into the rich tapestry of stories surrounding the women of the Hebrides, highlighting their strength, resilience, and vital contributions to island life. The evening provided a wonderful opportunity for attendees to engage with Joni and discover the inspiration behind her research.

Joni shared her fascinating journey in researching the narratives of island women, weaving in personal anecdotes and insights that reflect the essence of their experiences. Her passion for preserving and celebrating the stories of these remarkable women was evident and deeply moving.

The event featured several local speakers who brought their own experiences to life. Neilina MacInnes gave a warm account of growing up in a house full of fishermen, sharing her admiration for her Granny, Alexina MacKinnon. Seonag MacKinnon (Seonag a 'Dee) spoke fondly of her mother, who was born and raised on Eriskay, recounting treasured memories she had shared before passing away recently.

Cathy Laing, who lives in North Uist, shared her experiences of growing up in a traveling family and her cherished trips to Eriskay with her father to purchase Eriskay Ponies, reliving the excitement of traveling back on the car ferry. Seonag Campbell spoke warmly of her mother, who was raised in Edinburgh before meeting an Eriskay man. She shared her mother’s experiences of moving to Eriskay and starting a family, illustrating the deep connections formed between different cultures and communities.

The evening was not just a book launch; it was a heartfelt celebration of the women whose stories deserve to be told and remembered. Attendees enjoyed refreshments while mingling and sharing their thoughts on the book and its themes, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
