The Eriskay Jersey is a seamless hand knitted garment that reflects the island’s rich culture, heritage and craftsmanship. It was first created by an Eriskay Herring Girl, who combined various patterns she admired from others she met while at the gutting. These other girls, coming from different fishing communities, each brought their own styles and patterns.
The Eriskay Jersey has been passed down through the generations from mother to daughter. These jerseys were originally knitted for their fishermen, offering warmth, durability, and a personal touch.
The patterns were often unique to each family, adding a personal touch and a form of identification, making the jerseys not only practical but also deeply meaningful pieces of heritage. Each jersey tells a story through their knitting patterns, making it a cherished part of Eriskay’s culture today.
