The Eriskay Pony, is Scotland’s native horse, named after the island where due to remoteness the pony remained pure. Now a rare breed as there are fewer than 300 breeding Eriskay Ponies left in the world today. Comann Each nan Eilean was formed in 1972 to help save the breed. www.eriskaypony.scot
Crofters depended on the ponies to carry peat , seaweed, and supplies across the rocky terrain. While their role in daily work has lessened, they are still a vital part of Eriskay’s heritage.
As Father Calum MacLellan once said, "Without the people of Eriskay there would be no pony, but without the pony there would have been no people on Eriskay."
These ponies roam freely grazing through the townships in winter, and spend summers on Beinn Sgrithean. Honeysuckle, which grows naturally on Eriskay, can only be seen on ledges and cliffs where the ponies can’t reach.
